Hattori Hanzo is regarded as the most famous Japanese Samurai ever. He survived numerous battles and was one of the few Samurai to excel in both military and literary arts.
Hattori Hanzo was born into a low-rank Samurai family in 1541. At the age of 18, he became part of an elite class called “ronin” after his father’s death. From there, he served under many different warlords including Tokugawa Ieyasu, who served as the first shogun of the Tokugawa Shogunate. Eventually, Hattori Hanzo became Tokugawa’s right-hand man and was given a position that would be unheard of during that time.

His father, Ikkaku, was an experienced warrior and a veteran of the Battle of Kawanakajima. He was also a member of the Samurai class and served as a senior retainer to the powerful warlord Takeda Shingen. Facing pressure from his father, Hattori Hanzo became one of Shingen’s most loyal Samurai.
Born in 1541, in Kai Province, Japan, the name Hattori Hanzo meant “one who is in the service of one’s country”.
Hattori Hanzo was a crucial figure in the history of Japan. He was a master swordsman and inventor of several weapons, including the hand-held ninja sword known as the ‘hanzo sword’. His most famous invention is likely the shuriken or ‘flying blade’ which he created with his childhood friend, Kamiizumi Nobutsuna.
A legendary figure in Japanese history, he is also believed to have served as an adviser to Tokugawa Ieyasu during his rise to power and served under him during the Sekigahara campaign.

It is said that, on his deathbed, he wanted to find the perfect person to take over his duties. He searched for a suitable successor and found none. He then took his own life and bequeathed his knowledge and skills to nobody else. This is the typical mentality of Samurai and those that respected their family honor.
